Does the planet need snails?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct1pr1

1810
Researchers think that this diet, Jan and Ken described, is one of the key
reasons these snails are so important to the eco system here. Back at museum Ken told me why.
1823
Here in Hawaii snails, the native ones tend not to eat plants, which is a kind of unusual and people are often surprised that find out.
1830
That is surprising because that is what everyone hates them for ???(1)??? my country.
1834
That's often what had known for around the world, but not all snails do that. Vast majority of the snails don't eat plants here. We like call them micro fauna, farmers of the forert. They consume bacteria, fungi, algae, things like that on the surface of leaves of plants. And what we don't have hard evidence that this is a really important function, anecdotally we’ve talked pivotal work done by snails for fifty plus years here in Hawaii. They will tell yot that as the snails are decline, they noticed the increase in ???(1)??? native plants. And we speculated that this probably has impact on the plant ???(2)??? photo-symthesis ???(3)??? produce energy in needs to grow. In Hawaii our plants evolved on the island without much competition, and so modern times we have a lot of non native plants which have been introduced. There has been a lot of habitats distraction, and so as the native plants are reduced in number and then they are less able to photo-symthesis and grow competitively, the non native plants start to take over.
1945
So I’m getting a sense of the beautiful indigenous plants and parts of what keeps them successfully existing are these snails, so you take snails out then the native plants do less well which means the invasive spices can take over.
2005
Yeh, I mean that is a part of puzzles we think. That's really complex. You know, a lot of pieces that we don't understand, that's one of the things our team is doing and trying to figure out. All of these intricacies of how snails, plants, insects, all of the fauna and flora interact one another that create this sort of unique system we have in Hawaii.
2025
Why is it important to know more about this?
2029
The snails in the Hawaii are highly endangered. ???(1)??? matter of fact, snails throughout the Pacific are probably one of the most impacted groups of animals in the world. Snails account for nearly half of all recorded animal extinction since 1600s. And most of those are ???(2)??? Pacific islands, and we are likely to lose the remaining few hundreds within the next decade if we don't do something to save them.
