Hello. Last weekend I met ???(1)??? with my ten-year old grand daughter Rose. She sat opposite me alongside the parents on one side of the restaurant table, appeared to be silently enjoying her food while the adults chattered happily way about their lives and times. ???(2)??? I recognized that it was incumbent on me as a loving grand father, or any indeed any sort of proper grand father, to attempt some conversation with her. I dutifully asked her what was school like? what was her favorite subjects? what do you want to be when she was grown up? But even as I asked, I was silently aware how much my questions, not about fun, but implicitly about how well her parents, my son and his wife, were preparing her for successful life ahead.
0103
And it was ???(1)??? new paper by Benedetta Cappellini, Professor of Marketing at Durham University. But I realized how much my questions are reflection, symptom if you like, of the significant shift in parenting culture, shift towards what Benedetta call intensive parenting. Well now, Benedetta now joins me.
0121
Benedetta, how do you define intensive parenting? What would you say who is principal figuring?
0126
We should start by saying that I like the earlier ???(1)??? advice. Intensive parenting ???(2)??? solely around the child. The need of the child which had been expanded and today we are not talking just of the physical need of the child but also of psychological ???(3)??? need. Parents are encouraged to learn from experts. They have a lot of advice from pediatricians, doctors, even celebrities if you like, influencers and of all this advice are centered around consumption. So parents are encouraged to buy gadgets, brand objects and experiences for their children to nature them. And very importantly to develop ???(4)??? skills ???(5)???. They are cultural, social capital. So the model of parenting here is around the concept of education Is these ideas that childhood cannot be ???(6)??? naturally. The child is at risk, at risk of not doing well at school, at risk on not performing very well in sports. The last point, probably ???(7)??? should make in define intensive parenting is that it is a classed idea of good parenting. So only the very lucky and very fortunate ones in society have the financial resources to buy so many products for their children. So it's a middle class way of doing parenting, and this is something that quite important to emphasize, because it's becoming more and more normalized way of looking after children, which means that the working class parents, for example, are judged against the standards that be cannot simply be afford.

Chris Elliott on fighting food fraud

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001gwyh

I dictated the BBC program. Your advice and corrections are appreciated.

In this episode we dig into the lucrative world of food crime with the scientist who has made it his life’s work to scupper fraudsters, such as those behind 2013 horse meats scam and ensure what we're eating is what it says it is. Bon appetit.
0034
Hello, how do we know we can trust food we eat whether your sprinkling dried herbs into stew, or tucking into a ready made lasagna, how can you be sure that the product you bought is what it says it is? Or indeed it is safe because that oregano could just be much cheaper crushed olive leaves, and beef ragu could be, well, horse meats, or of course they could potentially contain something far worse. Luckily for all of us, exploring how we identify contaminants in the food and finding the technologies to allow us to that is what my guest today’s all about. He is something of a food detective. Chris Elliott is the professor of food safety and micro biology at Queen’s University, Belfast, and founding director of its institute for global food security. During impressively packed career that has taken him all over the world. Chris has been an instrumental in developing scientific solutions to protect those animals and humans from contaminated food. In 2013 horse meats scandal broke in the UK. When it was revealed that foods purporting to be made with beef, in fact contained undeclared horse meats. When the government subsequently wanted an independent review of the UK food system, Chris Elliott was clearly the man for the job. And the scientific he has pioneered to read the miraculous fingerprints of food stuffs and confirm their authenticity are specifically designed to be easily usable anywhere in the world. All these achievements are far cry from his childhood years growing up in Belfast during the troubles. When Chris describes himself as being a bloody awful student who left school at sixteen. He has come a long way since then. Chris Elliott, welcome to Life Scientific.
